Stoke sub Hamdon is a settlement of 2200 people at the 2001 census, and there are at least 950 homes.

It is some five miles west of Yeovil and is well served by the A303 trunk road to the north and the A3088 to the east. The nearby villages of Montacute, Norton sub Hamdon and Odcombe use Stoke as their centre. To the south and within the parish limits is the Iron Age and Roman settlement of Ham Hill, a much visited country park. Many of the buildings are Listed, and much of the village is in a Conservation Area. The village has Castle Primary and Stanchester Secondary schools. The latter draws on a large catchment of pupils from Martock, South Petherton and numerous smaller parishes. The area is predominantly agricultural, with a high proportion of the land owned by the Duchy of Cornwall estate. There is a small cluster of businesses centred on a purpose built business park.

Our parish continues to host three churches, a veterinary surgeon, dentist, doctor, post office, chemist, two grocery stores, three public houses and several other specialist shops. There is a sheltered housing facility, two play areas for children and a modern village hall. Recreation is delivered through many interest groups including the Boys' Brigade, Youth Club, Short Mat Bowls, the St Mary's-run Coffee Shop, in fact an activity for every age group. Physical activity is encouraged on the recreation field with organised sport including football. A purpose built skateboard park and BMX track are used regularly by the youth of the village.

Stoke sub Hamdon is on the southern edge of the Somerset Levels. The Blackdown Hills, Bristol Channel and South Coast are all within easy reach. The nearest access for the M5 Motorway is at Taunton, 25 miles west.
